GreenDC: optimisation algorithms for data centre energy
Implementing the optimisation algorithms for an EU-funded project on forecasting and reducing energy consumption in a telecom operator's data centre.
GreenDC was an EU-funded project analysing electricity consumption in the data centre of the Turkish telecom operator Turksat. The system had three parts: estimating future demand from historical patterns such as weekdays, holidays and seasons, optimising how energy is used, and managing the result.
My part was the optimisation layer. The algorithms were specified by researchers at Brunel University London and my work was to turn those specifications into working code inside the platform, as part of the DAVID Holding team.
It is the earliest piece of work in this list, and in hindsight the closest to what I do now: models that carry real operational consequences, and the unglamorous engineering that makes them usable.
